So many people I meet tell me that they are working in jobs or businesses they absolutely hate. Some of them know what they would really love to do and some of them have no idea at all what it is they would really love to do.
I have a philosophy of life whereby everything I do, I do with love. I also choose to do things that I love to do. There is a distinction here so if you didn’t see it, please re-read the previous two sentences until you understand the difference.
As a first priority I choose to do things I love to do. The way I found these was to try out a large variety of things to find the activities I most enjoyed. Some people use their hobbies as a reference point. They look at the things they are most passionate about. An effective strategy is to make a list of all the things you love to do. Then ask yourself, if you won $10 million in the lottery tomorrow, would you still want to do the things on your list. Your first reaction may be “to heck with everything, I’ll just go fishing for the rest of my life” or “I’ll travel for the rest of my life.” While that may sound attractive initially, I’d like to assure you that you will soon tire of that idea. Once the novelty wears off, you need a purpose for your life.
Some people love to do the same thing for a lifetime and wouldn’t have it any other way. Others find that the things they love doing, change as they go through life. Whatever works for you is OK. You need to follow your own dreams, not someone else’s. Nor do you need to concern yourself with what others think of your dream.
Your life will also be more fulfilled if you have goals you want to achieve. At the end of Chapter 4, in the book,
Financial Freedom . . . starting now! – An Action Guide, I provide a number of very useful exercises on how to find the things you love to do. This is the most important starting point because if you don’t know that, you’ll drift through life aimlessly and unfulfilled.
Once you have found what it is that you love to do, you need to find a way of making money from it. Now if it’s fishing you love, you may be tempted to think that it may be hard to be paid for something which gives you so much pleasure. Well Rex Hunt does, and he gets paid very well for indulging in his favourite sport. Think also of Jaques Cousteau, Troy Dan, Tiger Woods, Sara Henderson, Greg Norman, Bill Collins and so many others who are being well paid for doing the things they love most. The proof is there. It can be done!
So, are you doing what you love most and earning money from it? Is what you are doing today, helping you reach your goals? If not, what can you do differently?
It may be that you are in a job or business at the moment that you no longer love. If that’s the case, you’re not alone. There are millions of people just like you. The question you need to look at, is: What are you doing about it? If the only thing you are doing is complaining and making yourself miserable, then you are a victim by choice.
Here are 10 strategies you might like to investigate:
- Decide on what you would really like to do with your life (Refer to Chapter 4, in the book, Financial Freedom . . . starting now! – An Action Guide).
- What resources would you need to do what you love?
- Work out a plan to get into the area you love.
- Decide on a timeframe to move into that area. Give yourself a deadline!
- Find a coach or mentor who may be able to assist you in achieving your goal.
- Look at your life now and identify all the activities that are not supporting you in reaching your goals and decide to eliminate them from your life.
- Make a firm commitment to follow your dream and as the ad says, Just Do It!
- Take action every day and do something (no matter how small) which will support you in reaching your goals.
- Check your progress daily by asking yourself: Is what I am doing today (and even right now) helping me reach my goals? If not, stop doing it!
