It was Henry David Thoreau who said, “dig with your mind, not your hands”. Most people want to dig with their hands. They work harder, they work extra jobs, they do more overtime or they skip their holidays. They hope that by doing so, they will become wealthy. In fact quite the opposite is true. Working harder and longer is not the way to dramatically increase your income and build wealth. It’s only by digging with your mind that you will become rich and happy. You can’t work harder and become dramatically richer and happier. Working harder will only give you an incremental increase in your income and in most cases will lead to imbalance in your life.
To dramatically change your situation, you need to think differently, talk differently and behave differently. You have to think, talk and behave like someone who is already rich and happy. You have to develop an abundance mentality and create reserves of energy, time and resources in your life. To be truly rich and happy you need to build your wealth on a solid foundation. In other words, you have to earn the right to be rich and happy. As I explain in the book,
How To Be Rich & Happy On Your Income, you do this by embodying values, beliefs and behaviours that support wealth and then you will attract an abundance of wealth into your life.
The process of attraction is a very powerful one. Sadly, many people are not aware of its power and how to support this process. The way we think, the way we speak and the way we behave have a very strong influence over what and who we attract into our lives.
I often find myself talking to business people and to people who think that they are business people. A person who is serious about their business behaves in a confident and business-like manner. It is soon apparent that this person is professional about what they are doing. Their behaviour and their manner attracts others who want to do business with them.
A would-be business person on the other hand is the one without the business cards, the one who dresses inappropriately, and the one who cannot confidently and succinctly describe the business they are in. If they actually have a fax machine, they only buy one fax roll at a time and the paper usually runs out at the most inconvenient time. They have no reserves of stationery or other resources and their office is the kitchen table. They often do not have a letterhead and “they will invest in a computer as soon as sales pick up.” By their beliefs, attitudes and behaviours, these people are sabotaging themselves. This type of behaviour repels clients. These people find it difficult to achieve success regardless of how hard they work. The more they dig with their hands, the deeper they dig themselves into a hole. The harder they work, the more frustrated they become and the more their health and relationships suffer. The only way to move forward is to dig with your mind and not with your hands.
Rich people are not rich because they have money. They have money because they are rich. They are rich in their beliefs, abundant in their expectations and they behave prosperously. They buy a box of fax rolls instead of a single roll because they want to maintain a reserve. They want to know that they will have supplies available when they need them. Their behaviours attract further prosperity into their lives. Rich people know that money is not wealth. They know that if they lost everything one day, they would soon attract it back into their lives because of the way they think and behave. They know that it is far more powerful to dig with your mind, not your hands.
